In declaring his respect and love for the Gospel first gave us the God-guided sequence of events which brought the Gospel to us. He went further to tell the readers that the faith that comes from the gospel is a source of encouragement for those who share in it. From these verses it is obvious that Paul’s eagerness to preach at Rome and his sense of obligation to them must have come from his recognition of the source and power of the Gospel. Therefore the conviction and confidence with which he made his declaration in verse 16 is not surprising.
It is in this gospel that the righteousness of God is revealed and men and women need to accept God’s method of righteousness in order to live here and in the hereafter. Paul is very clear in declaring that men and women are being affected by the wrath of God in their daily lives. He goes on to list some of the ways we can know those being affected. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossipers, homosexuals, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant etc.
Fully abreast of the situation, Paul was eager to preach. He was eager to save them from their current situation and more importantly from the certain path to the eternal hell. In chapter 2 he tells us in verse two of two outcomes-“To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life, But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger. That is eternal wrath and anger.
We cannot be ashamed of the Gospel. We have to watch for that “stubbornness and unrepentant heart” and continue and increase our attempts to save men and women from the wrath of God now and help in preventing them from “storing up wrath against themselves for the day of God’s wrath”. Let us nor be ashamed!
